From the Desk of the Director of Extension Education
Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University established in 2006 at Ludhiana, has emerged as a premier institution dedicated to excellence in veterinary, dairy, fisheries, agriculture, and allied sciences education, research, and extension. With a strong commitment to scientific innovation and community welfare, the University continues to strengthen livestock production, animal health, and sustainable farming systems through an integrated approach of teaching, research, and outreach. Over the years, Vet Varsity has earned national and international recognition for its significant contributions toward the advancement of the livestock and agricultural sectors.
Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), functioning as district-level Farm Science Centres, play a pivotal role in translating scientific knowledge into practical solutions for the farming community. These centres serve as dynamic platforms for assessment, refinement, and dissemination of modern agricultural and animal husbandry technologies aimed at bridging the gap between research and field application.
Under the administrative control of GADVASU, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra Tarn Taran was sanctioned by ICAR in December 2011 at Booh village to cater to the needs of farmers in the border district of Tarn Taran. Since its inception, KVK Tarn Taran has been working tirelessly to uplift the socio-economic status of farmers, rural youth, and farm women through need-based extension programmes, frontline demonstrations, on-farm trials, vocational trainings, and entrepreneurship development initiatives.
The KVK has established itself as a centre of excellence in livestock and agricultural extension activities. It actively promotes scientific dairy farming, piggery, poultry, fisheries, goat farming, beekeeping, and mushroom cultivation among rural entrepreneurs. Special emphasis is being laid on the conservation and productivity enhancement of indigenous livestock breeds such as the Nili Ravi buffalo, Sahiwal cattle, and Beetal goat, which are integral to the farming systems of the region. Initiatives such as Nili Ravi Milking Competitions and Goat Melas have further strengthened farmer awareness, participation, and breed improvement efforts.
In addition to livestock development, KVK Tarn Taran is actively engaged in promoting climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural practices. Its interventions encompass natural resource management, crop residue management, water conservation, horticulture, diversification of farming systems, and value addition of agricultural and livestock produce. Through these multidimensional activities, the KVK is helping farmers adopt innovative technologies that enhance productivity, profitability, and environmental sustainability.
The extension services rendered by the KVK have significantly contributed to organizing farmers into more functional, informed, and action-oriented groups. These efforts facilitate better access to scientific knowledge, quality inputs, government welfare schemes, and market linkages. By empowering farmers with practical knowledge and skill-oriented training, KVK Tarn Taran continues to serve as a vibrant “Knowledge and Resource Centre” for the farming community.
In the backdrop of changing climatic conditions and emerging agricultural challenges, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and KVK Tarn Taran remain steadfast in their mission to promote sustainable and profitable farming through science-led interventions, farmer-centric innovations, and inclusive rural development.
Best Wishes
