Celebration of ‘World Soil Day’

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran operational under Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana celebrated ‘World Soil Day’ on December 04-05, 2018 with the FAO theme of “Be the Solution to Soil Pollution”  at village Mundapind to create mass awareness among the farmers regarding soil test based fertilizer application in agricultural and horticultural crops. Around 235 farmers, rural youths, school students and officials of different departments attended the programme at KVK. Different line department viz. Agriculture, ATMA also participated in the event. KVK, Neelam Feeds and Cargill Feeds also displayed their products in the exhibition stalls. In inaugural address, Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director, KVK, Tarn Taran welcome all the farmers, students, officials and companies for their participation in the event. He aware the farmers regarding ‘World Soil Day’ and highlighted that keeping in view the importance of soils, this day is being celebrated throughout the world. Information regarding soil testing and soil health management aspects is provided to the farmers by Dr Kumar. Competition on importance of soil and ways to reduce the soil pollution was held among students of Senior Secondary School Mundapind on December 4, 2018 where painting, essay writing and lectures by students were delivered. Dr Anil Kumar, Asstt. Professor (Soil Science), briefed the soil nutrient status of soils of Tarn Taran district. Dr Kumar told that this year they have issued 360 Soil Health Cards to the farmers. He appealed farmers to come forward for testing soils of their respective fields regularly and fertilizer application should be done following recommendations given in the soil health card, so that the fertility of mother earth/ soil may be sustained for longer duration. Experts from Punjab Agricultural University, Dr Hari Ram and Dr KS Suri interacted with participants on the aspect of micronutrient management and soil pollution and its remedy measures. They also highlighted that micronutrients play an important role in yield enhancement and quality improvement of crops. Dr Harinderjit Singh, CAO, Tarn Taran also appealed famers for soil test based fertilizer application. Dr Navjot Singh, Asstt. Professor (Agronomy), discussed about weed control especially Phalaris minor in wheat. He also discussed about scientific production technology of rabi crops. Baba Nand Singh Ji of Mundapind Gurudwara also interacted with farmers and appealed farmers to follow the suggestions provided by experts to take more benefits from their crops. Dr Hardial Singh, Ex-Deputy Director (Horticulture) and Dr KS saini also elaborated different technology of soil management in horticultural and agricultural crops. On this occasion soil health cards were distributed the farmers. The farmers who has not burnt paddy straw and ploughed it into the soils, were also honored by the KVK. At the end of the programme Dr Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director, KVK, Tarn Taran thanked all the farmers, students, officials and companies for their participation and making this programme a success.
