Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Booh, Tarn Taran in collaboration with Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Tarn Taran organized ‘Field Harvest Day on Happy Seeder Sown Wheat’ in the field of S. Baljit Singh, Village Bangla Rai, on 11th April 2018 and at field of Sh. Bhagwant Singh at village Sabhra on 20th April 2018. S. Baljit Singh had sown his 45 acres of wheat with happy seeder while S. Bhagwant Singh had sown his own 15 acres of wheat with happy seeder and also sown 70 acres of other farmers on custom hiring basis. At Village Bangla Rai about 120 farmers had attended the programme from different villages of block Patti while at village Sabhra, 50 farmers attended the programme. Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director (Training) highlighted the effect of residue burning on environment, soil fertility and human health. He said that by sowing of wheat with happy seeder, the paddy straw retained on the surface of field helps in maintaining moisture in soil, increase soil microbial population in soil and also increases soil fertility by recycling the nutrients in soil. Navjot Singh Brar, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) gave detailed information about the importance of Happy seeder in managing the paddy straw. He said that happy seeder helps in timely sowing of wheat after paddy without burning of paddy straw, the problem of weeds is significantly decreased and there is also saving of irrigation water, as the crop sown with happy seeder requires 1 to 2 less irrigations. Dr Sukhwinder Singh Block Agriculture Officer Patti, Bhupinder Singh ADO also expressed their views on importance of in-situ management of paddy and wheat straw. Sher Singh (Progressive farmer) from village Kot Budda shared his own experience about happy seeder sown wheat with farmers and said that the cost of cultivation decreases with adoption of happy seeder and soil health improve. He said that it also helped in decreasing weed problem. Farmers present on the occasion were impressed by the condition of happy seeder sown wheat and gave their consent to adopt happy seeder for sowing of wheat without burning of paddy straw. S. Bhagwant Singh was also honored on this occasion for his contribution for promoting happy seeder in area.
At the end of the program, Navjot Singh Brar proposed vote of thanks. He thanked the farmers for their active participation and interest. The participants appreciated the efforts of the KVK Scientists and Officials of Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Distt Tarn Taran for providing time to time guidance to the farmers for the adoption of advanced technologies for saving of natural resources and to increase crop productivity.
